Sierra Leone’s First Wind Farm to Be Built on Sherbro Island
Sierra Leone’s first wind farm will be built on Sherbro Island by Octopus Energy in partnership with Idris Elba. The transformative renewable energy project, located near Bonthe, the island’s main town, is set to begin in 2025.
The project is expected to provide clean energy for 2000 homes upon completion. Announced at the 2024 COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, this milestone aims to enhance energy access and drive economic growth in Sierra Leone.
Sherbro Island Wind Farm to Expand Energy Access in Rural Areas
For Sierra Leone, where over 65% of the population lacks reliable electricity, this initiative is a major milestone in the energy sector. In addition the wind farm is expected to boost schools, medical centers, and businesses fostering growth in Sherbro Island’s fishing industry.
With rural electrification at only 5%, this initiative addresses a crucial need for sustainable power and economic development. This wind farm represents a monumental step forward in addressing the country’s energy deficit.
Elba, a renowned actor and philanthropist, is a key collaborator on the Sherbro Island wind farm project. Elba, whose father hails from Sierra Leone, has often spoken about his desire to contribute to its development. This project aligns with his commitment to sustainable growth and empowering African communities. His Sierra Leonean roots and passion for renewable energy inspire his collaboration to drive his collaboration to drive a greener future.
“We’re building not just a wind farm, but a foundation of sustainable growth and energy independence in Sierra Leone. With the turbines scheduled for installation next year, it’ll stand as a powerful testament to our commitment to a cleaner, greener future for Sierra Leone and beyond,” he said.
Boosting Economic Development Through Renewable Energy
The project promises to create jobs and training opportunities for Sierra Leoneans. Also, Octopus Energy is partnering with local universities to equip young people with renewable energy skills. Thus paving the way for future-proofed careers. Zosia North-Bond, CEO of Octopus Energy Generation, highlighted the project’s potential to serve as a model for future developments.
“The wind farm will expand energy access, generating clean power and job opportunities in the local economy and community. The insights we’ll gain will provide the blueprint to scale even more wind and solar farms in the future,” said North-Bond.
The effects of this initiative are expected to extend beyond Sherbro Island. It will contribute to infrastructure development, including improved roads and shipping routes, while showcasing Sierra Leone’s potential as a renewable energy keyplayer in Africa.
The project underscores Sierra Leone’s commitment to global climate goals, aligning with the nation’s efforts to adopt clean energy sources. On Sherbro Island in particular, the need for clean energy to combat climate change is an urgent one. The island is prone to rising sea-levels and intense rainfall. However, with construction set to begin next year, the Sherbro Island wind farm is poised to become a symbol of progress.
